Alex Ovechkin Returns to Capitals, Full Details on New Contract After NHL Retirement Rumors

Julia StumbaughJul 2, 2026

Alex Ovechkin will have at least one more season to continue extending the NHL's all-time goalscoring record.

Ovechkin signed a one-year, $4.25 million contract with the Washington Capitals on Thursday.

The Athletic's Chris Johnston noted the deal is basically worth $9 million because of an easily achievable incentive tied to games played:

Ovechkin most recently scored 32 goals and recorded 64 points in 82 games of his 21st season with the Washington Capitals.

He said in April his offseason decision about his NHL future would depend on his health heading into his age-41 season.

Ovechkin's return means he will now get at least one more chance to lead his team into the playoffs after the Capitals fell short of the postseason last spring.

Selected by the Washington Capitals at the top of the 2004 draft and named team captain in 2010, Ovechkin has since led the franchise into its most successful era in history.

Ovechkin helped the Capitals claim three Presidents' Trophies as the top team in the regular season before he led the franchise to its first Stanley Cup win in 2018.

He was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy that summer after leading the Capitals with 15 goals in 24 playoff games.

Ovechkin has also won nine Rocket Richard Trophies as the most consistent scorer of the NHL's modern era.

On April 6, 2025, Ovechkin scored the 895th goal of his career against the New York Islanders to break Wayne Gretzky's longstanding record.

Ovechkin went on to extend the all-time record to 929 career goals by the end of the 2025-26 season.

The Capitals will hope to take advantage of the continued presence of their captain by building another postseason contender around Ovechkin this offseason.

After a trip to the second round in 2024 followed by a missed postseason last spring, the Caps will now get at least one more chance to cap off Ovechkin's NHL career with a deeper playoff run.

Originally selected by the Capitals with the No. 1 pick of the 2004 draft, Ovechkin has recorded 1,687 points in 1,573 regular-season games to go along with 77 goals and 147 points in 161 playoff games.

He will look to extend his goalscoring record even further as he looks to become the first player in NHL history to record a 22nd season with 30 goals.
