Spurs Reportedly Expected To 'Actively' Pursue Wing amid Durant, Giannis Trade Rumors

Joseph ZuckerMay 27, 2025

The San Antonio Spurs may single out the wing position on the court as they upgrade their supporting cast around star big man Victor Wembanyama, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.

"I think they're going to be looking very actively to see is there a wing player we can bring in that could take us over the top," Charania said on The Pat McAfee Show.

Charania specifically listed Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kevin Durant as options, noting Durant and the Spurs had "mutual interest" at the NBA trade deadline.

San Antonio already sped up its timeline when it acquired De'Aaron Fox from the Sacramento Kings at the trade deadline. The front office also retained enough assets to pursue another marquee target at a later date, and winding up with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft further strengthened their hand.

ESPN's Brian Windhorst suggested May 19 on the Dan Patrick Show the Spurs can make a compelling pitch to both the Bucks and Antetokounmpo.

They can sell Milwaukee on a trade package that includes the No. 2 pick and Rookie of the Year winner Stephon Castle. Antetokounmpo, meanwhile, might be intrigued by the opportunity to line up alongside Wembanyama and Fox.

Whether the target is Giannis, Durant or another star, executing a trade of that scale isn't without risk.

The Phoenix Suns thought KD was the final piece of a title puzzle and wound up worse in the short and long term. For all of their success in the regular season, the Cleveland Cavaliers still haven't navigated past the second round with Donovan Mitchell.

It might make sense to wait until next summer to weigh a move that brings immediate expectations of a deep playoff run.

Thanks to Wembanyama's deep vein thrombosis diagnosis, he and Fox played only five games together. It's impossible to draw any conclusions about their partnership, so maybe San Antonio is better than people realize.

An addition as sizable as Antetokounmpo or Durant may not be required to make the Spurs a serious contender.
