Vitale has battled various forms of cancer in the last four years. He originally had surgery in June 2021 to remove a growth above his nose that was revealed to be melanoma.

A few months after that initial procedure, Vitale announced he was diagnosed with lymphoma. He also battled cancer in his vocal cords and a cancerous lymph node that was removed from his neck.

Vitale announced in December that a follow-up scan from his neck procedure came back clean.

Due to all of the health concerns that have plagued Vitale in recent years, he had to step back from his job as a college basketball analyst for ESPN. The Hall of Famer returned to the broadcast booth after a two-year layoff when he called the Duke-Clemson game at Littlejohn Coliseum.

ESPN president Jimmy Pitaro announced on May 4 that Vitale's contract with the network has been extended for two more years.

Vitale has been calling college games on ESPN since December 1979. His new deal will keep him with the network through the 2028-29 season.
