Cooper Flagg Reportedly 'Thrilled' About Mavs Possibly Drafting Him with No. 1 Pick

Andrew PetersMay 13, 2025

Cooper Flagg was reportedly more than happy to see the Dallas Mavericks land the No. 1 pick in Monday's NBA draft lottery.

Per ESPN's Jonathan Givony, the presumed top pick in next month's draft "is said to be thrilled by the idea of joining" the Mavericks because of their ability to compete now while surrounding him with veterans immediately. Flagg would also have the chance to contribute immediately in Dallas due to the team's scarcity in the small forward position.

The Mavs won the draft lottery on Monday despite having just a 1.8 percent chance to land the top pick. When Flagg declared for the draft, he likely wasn't expecting Dallas to be the team with the No. 1 pick, but it could be the perfect landing spot for him.

Flagg may not be the immediate star on the Mavericks with players like Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson on the roster, but he should have the chance to start immediately since Dallas doesn't have an established player at small forward.

Playing alongside Davis, Irving and Thompson would not only allow him the chance to learn from veterans with championship experience, but he'll be on a team capable of competing in the playoffs immediately. Had a team like the Washington Wizards, Utah Jazz or another bottom-ranked squad landed the top pick, it would take a few years of building around Flagg to compete in the postseason.

Of course, for Flagg to make Dallas his new home, the Mavericks will first need to draft him, though that likely isn't something he needs to worry about. The Duke star had a phenomenal year with the Blue Devils, posting 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game on his way to winning National Player of the Year.

The Mavs reportedly have no plans to trade away their No. 1 pick, so it seems Flagg should be touching down in Dallas soon.
