Kyrie Irving Reacts to Mavs Winning Cooper Flagg Sweepstakes at 2025 NBA Draft Lottery
The Dallas Mavericks shocked the basketball world once again after winning the NBA draft lottery on Monday night, giving them the chance to use the No. 1 pick to select top prospect Cooper Flagg.
Mavs star point guard Kyrie Irving took to social media to react to the stunning development, finding humor in the team getting the No. 1 pick despite entering the lottery with just a 1.8 percent chance for the selection.
Landing the No. 1 pick in this year's draft is the latest development in a roller-coaster season for the Mavs. It was just a few months ago that they made arguably the most surprising trade in NBA history when they sent star guard Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for a packaged headlined by star forward Anthony Davis, which kicked off a run of misfortune in Dallas.
After Davis suffered an adductor strain in his Mavs debut that caused him to miss six weeks, the team endured a string of injuries to multiple key players, most notably Irving. The 33-year-old suffered a torn ACL in March that ended his season prematurely and will likely cost him a significant portion of next season as well.
Dallas did its best to back its way into the playoffs after finishing 10th in the Western Conference with a 39-43 record. After defeating the Sacramento Kings in the play-in tournament, the Mavs lost to the Memphis Grizzlies with the No. 8 seed on the line, ending their season without a playoff appearance just a year after making it to the NBA Finals.
However, the prospect of drafting Flagg brings renewed optimism for Dallas following its tumultuous year. The former Duke star has long been projected as the No. 1 pick in this year's draft, and his freshman season with the Blue Devils solidified that status after he was named National Player of the Year.
It will take some time before Irving is ready to take the floor alongside the Mavs' newest star, but it's clear that he's excited about the possibility of teaming with Flagg next season.
