Mavs Make History With NBA Draft Lottery After Wings Land Paige Bueckers No. 1 in WNBA

Lady Luck is currently vacationing in Dallas.

The Dallas Mavericks won the Cooper Flagg sweepstakes on Monday night at the NBA draft lottery, earning the top overall selection in June's draft. That came after the Dallas Wings won the Paige Bueckers sweepstakes, winning the WNBA's draft lottery earlier this year.

The assumption is that the Mavs will select Flagg, though the assumption was also that Nico Harrison and Patrick Dumont would never trade a superstar in his prime like Luka Dončić, so you never know.

But the chance to pair Flagg with Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving would be tough to pass up, giving the Mavericks both a player who can contribute immediately and one who can become the face of the franchise in the years to come. It was an incredible outcome for the Mavs, much like it was for the Wings when they earned the chance to select a game-changer like Bueckers. She'll make her WNBA regular-season debut on Friday, May 16 as the Wings begin the 2025 campaign.

It's been a roller-coaster of a year for hoops fans in Dallas. But the future suddenly seems much more bright than it did in early February.
