Hornets' Brandon Miller Testifies He Was Almost Hit By Bullets During 2023 Shooting

Doric SamMay 8, 2025

Charlotte Hornets shooting guard and former Alabama star Brandon Miller testified that he was almost struck by bullets fired into his car during a January 2023 shooting near The Strip in Tuscaloosa that caused the death of Jamea Harris, per ESPN's Michael Rothstein.

Miller was speaking as a prosecution witness in the capital murder trial of Michael Lynn Davis, who is accused of fatally shooting Harris in the early morning of Jan. 15, 2023. Miller's former Alabama teammate Darius Miles was arrested alongside Davis and was charged with "aiding and abetting" Davis by providing the gun used in the shooting.

Per Rothstein, this marked the first time that Miller has spoken publicly in detail about the night of the incident. The 22-year-old reportedly testified for nearly 90 minutes about his involvement and recollections.

Miller is not accused of any wrongdoing, but a police investigator testified in February 2023 that he drove the gun to the scene after Miles asked him to do so, and it was taken out of the car by Davis and Miles.

On Thursday, Chief Assistant District Attorney Paula Whitley asked Miller if he was offered something in exchange for not being charged with a crime, and he testified, "No promises. Just being cooperative." He also testified that he didn't know what Miles intended to do with the gun, nor did he speak with Miles and Davis when they retrieved the gun from his car.

Rothstein reported that dashcam footage from Miller's car was played in the courtroom and showed that "Davis shot two bullets into Miller's car -- striking the windshield and almost hitting Miller -- while running away." Former basketball manager Cooper Lee was in the car with Miller as he sped away from the scene, and one of them can be heard saying, "We almost just got killed" and asking, "What the f--k just happened?"

Miller testified that he was unaware that Harris was killed in the shooting when he fled the scene. He spoke with police investigators twice soon after the shooting with his attorney accompanying him.

Davis could face life in prison if convicted for capital murder. Prosecutors opted not to seek the death penalty. Miles' trial date has not yet been scheduled.
