Mavs Reportedly Made 'Multiple Training Staff Changes' After Injury-Filled NBA Season

It was largely a season to forget for the Dallas Mavericks in part because of injuries, and they are reportedly making some changes to their training staff.

NBA insider Marc Stein reported Wednesday that Dallas "made multiple training staff changes today after a season filled with injuries and marked by no shortage of tumult within its medical and performance team."

Dallas' decision to trade Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers ended up defining its season and leading to plenty of ridicule and angst from the fans.

But perhaps things would have unfolded differently if the team stayed healthy.

Anthony Davis, who was the headliner in the return package for Dončić, suffered a groin injury in his first game with the Mavericks and missed more than a month. Kyrie Irving then tore his ACL when Davis was sidelined, ending the star guard's season.

Suddenly, the Irving-Davis tandem that Dallas surely envisioned playing well after trading Dončić would not be together until next season.

Those were the biggest injuries, but Dereck Lively II was limited to 36 games while Daniel Gafford was limited to 57. Lively's foot injury reportedly caused strain within the training staff as well.

Stein reported there was "a blowup between department lead Johann Bilsborough and strength coach Keith Belton" regarding Lively's injury. He noted Belton was let go as part of the changes, while the belief is Dallas will retain Bilsborough:

Ultimately, the Mavericks ended up finishing with a 39-43 record.

That was good enough for the No. 10 seed in the Western Conference and a spot in the play-in tournament. They defeated the Sacramento Kings in the first play-in tournament game and then lost to the Memphis Grizzlies in the second, ending their season.

Dončić's Lakers lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the playoffs.
