Chandler Parsons Blasts DeAndre Jordan for Spurning Mavericks for Clippers

Alec NathanJul 9, 2015

The Dallas Mavericks thought they had a deal in place to bring center DeAndre Jordan aboard on a four-year contract worth at least $80 million, per ESPN.com's Marc Stein and Tim MacMahon. But the 26-year-old's late change of heart to return to the Los Angeles Clippers thwarted those plans.

As a result, Mavericks swingman and lead Jordan recruiter Chandler Parsons has grown displeased with the big man.

According to MacMahon, Parsons sounded off on Jordan's decision Thursday, saying he was "shocked, very disappointed, frustrated, disrespected" after Jordan returned to the Clippers on a four-year max contract worth nearly $88 million, as reported by ESPN.com.

Parsons added the following regarding Jordan's unprecedented flip-flop:

"

This is something that I've never seen in my career, and I know that it doesn't happen very often. When a man gives you his word and an organization his word, especially when that organization put in so much effort and I walked him through this process and was very, very open and willing to work with him, it's just very unethical and disrespectful.

"

Clippers head coach Doc Rivers didn't feel the same way, apparently. According to the Orange County Register's Dan Woike, the coach told reporters he believes Jordan himself didn't have a responsibility to inform the Mavericks of his revised decision:

Parsons, of course, begged to differ:

"

Be a professional. Pick up the phone. If you're not going to meet with him, pick up the phone and tell the guy that you're committed to what you're feeling, what you're going through and maybe he can talk it out and help you. But do not ignore the guy. Do not make him sit there and sweat it out. That's just very unprofessional. I can't get over that part.

"

The Dallas small forward also told MacMahon he doesn't believe Jordan wanted to assume more responsibility as a cornerstone in Dallas:

"

He wasn’t ready for being a franchise player. He was scared. He was scared to take the next step in his career. There was no other reason other than that he was comfortable and he has friendships there. How you make a business decision like that is beyond me. How you ignore an owner like Mark who is in your hometown just waiting for a chance to talk to you is beyond me.

I don’t think he made a mistake. I think he’ll be good in L.A. He’s got a good team, he’s got a great point guard, he’s got Blake, but I think he could have been a superstar in Dallas. He could have been the man in Dallas. Never in a million years did I think that this was even a possibility.

"

After the Clippers secured a meeting with Jordan and got his commitment Wednesday night that ultimately kept the team's Big Three intact, Parsons expressed his bewilderment on Twitter:

ESPN's Bomani Jones believed Parsons' answers were rather self-serving:

The Mavericks are now left with a sizable hole to fill in the frontcourt next to Dirk Nowitzki, and options on the open market are dwindling fast.

While veteran bigs such as Carlos Boozer, Amar'e Stoudemire and Josh Smith are all still available, none of them can provide the youth, energy, bounce, rim protection or proficiency in the pick-and-roll that Jordan can offer.

"I’ll still be friends with him, but I can’t get over the way that he’s put our entire franchise in jeopardy," Parsons said, per MacMahon.

Dallas announced Wesley Matthews' official arrival Thursday afternoon, but the Mavs have faded out of the Western Conference title conversation, following Jordan's sudden shift.

But regardless of where the Clippers and Mavericks sit in the standings next season, clashes between the two should make for must-see TV.

Let's just hope Jordan gets switched on to Parsons on the perimeter a few times to settle this thing once and for all.
