NBA Free Agency 2015: Analyzing Rumors About Key Targets Left on Market

Tim DanielsJul 9, 2015

Although the NBA free-agency period took a weird twist with the DeAndre Jordan saga on Wednesday night, things are otherwise operating as normal. A majority of the most coveted players who were on the market have either agreed to deals or officially signed them.

Now the focus shifts more toward the secondary contributors. The players who aren't going to step in and make a significant impact like LaMarcus Aldridge, but are still capable of filling a void in the rotation and providing valuable minutes.

With that in mind, let's check out some of the latest rumors involving free agents who fall into that category as teams look to put the finishing touches on their rosters.

Josh Smith

Smith always creates a quandary because he features the physical tools necessary to take over a game, but too often settles for contested jump shots. He's a 46 percent shooter for his career, including an unsightly 29 percent from beyond the arc, which hurts his overall efficiency.

That said, finding the right system helps, as his move from the Detroit Pistons to the Houston Rockets illustrated last season. His shooting percentage jumped 47 points and his three-point percentage improved by 87 points after the move as he slid into a more ideal role.

So his impact is heavily dependent on finding the right landing spot. Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee reports the Sacramento Kings are one team that's showing serious interest now that the initial wave of free agency is over:

It's a good fit on paper, with Smith being able to receive consistent minutes while backing up both forward positions. He could even draw some starts depending on the development of Willie Cauley-Stein. But he wouldn't be asked to do too much, as was the case in Detroit.

Carlos Boozer

Boozer is no longer the double-double machine he was during his prime. That said, the 33-year-old forward remains a solid offensive threat and rebounder on the interior. He averaged 11.8 points and 6.8 rebounds in a shade under 24 minutes per game for the Los Angeles Lakers last season.

In a league where reliable post play has become a luxury, he's the type of signing that could really provide great bang for the buck. Chris Broussard of ESPN.com notes there are at least four teams considering him as an option:

The Los Angeles Clippers and Dallas Mavericks, the two sides involved in the Jordan squabble, are both involved once again. Obviously Dallas' need for another post player increased after losing that sweepstakes, so Boozer could get the most playing time there.

Beyond that, the New Orleans Pelicans are seemingly a nice match. They could use some more frontcourt depth to surround Anthony Davis, and the fact that defenses must focus so heavily on him would open up a lot of free looks for Boozer.

Amar'e Stoudemire

Every once in awhile Stoudemire will lower his shoulder, attack the rim and throw down a monster dunk like he so often did during the early stages of his career. Injuries have slowed him down, but there are still flashes of a highly effective power forward.

Keeping him healthy is the toughest part. He hasn't averaged more than 24 minutes per game since the 2011-12 season and has still been frequently sidelined by knee issues. Striking the right balance between getting value from him without pushing him too far has proved difficult.

Of course, those flashes of explosiveness ensure he will continue to attract interest. Bleacher Report's Jared Zwerling states the team making the biggest push for him right now is the Miami Heat:

The post is the biggest area of concern for Miami, especially with Chris Bosh returning from his blood clot scare. Adding Stoudemire would be a nice low-risk way to do exactly that, and there's also some nice upside to the deal if he can stay on the court all season.
