Ja Morant Out Indefinitely After Suffering Sprained Ankle Injury at Grizzlies Practice
Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant has suffered an ankle injury that will keep him out of action for the time being.
A Grizzlies team spokesperson told reporters on Monday that Morant went down in Sunday's practice with a sprained left ankle and is considered week-to-week.
The start of the 2025-26 season is still a few weeks away, but this is a rough turn of events for Morant following a lengthy run of injury-riddled years. He hasn't played in 65 games or more in five straight seasons.
After being limited to 50 games in the 2024-25 regular season, Morant was banged up in Memphis' first-round playoff series against the Oklahoma City Thunder. He took a hard fall on his hip in the second quarter of Game 3 when Lu Dort undercut him on a drive to the basket.
The Grizzlies ruled Morant out for the remainder of the game and announced he sat out Game 4 due to a hip contusion.
Morant's injury was the start of a disastrous turn of events for the Grizzlies in Game 3. They led by 27 at the time of his injury and eventually extended their advantage to 29 points. Oklahoma City outscored Memphis 63-31 in the second half to steal a victory and closed out the sweep in Game 4.
The Grizzlies made big moves in the offseason, notably trading Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic for a package of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and four first-round draft picks.
That move puts more pressure on Morant to get back to being the All-NBA player he was at his peak. Another injury for the 26-year-old will leave the Grizzlies scrambling to find offense as they try to compete in a loaded Western Conference.
