Tyrese Haliburton, Cade Cunningham Voted NBA's Most Overrated, Underrated by Players

Doric SamApr 22, 2025

Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton and Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham received recognition in The Athletic's anonymous player poll, but Haliburton likely won't be happy with his evaluation.

The Athletic's Sam Amick and Josh Robbins revealed that players voted Haliburton as the most overrated player in the NBA, with 14.4 percent of the 90 votes going his way. Meanwhile, Cunningham received the distinction of the NBA's most underrated player, receiving 8.8 percent of the 136 votes.

Cunningham topped the list of 75 players to receive at least one vote for most underrated. The 23-year-old is already on the verge of superstardom and has the chance to gain more attention during the playoffs. He dropped 33 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Pistons past the New York Knicks in Game 2 of their first-round series at Madison Square Garden on Monday night.

"He also earned his first All-Star berth this season, and his role as the driving force behind the Pistons’ turnaround has brought with it a far brighter spotlight," Amick and Robbins wrote. "An All-NBA selection is likely the next honor to come his way."

Like last year, 33 players received at least one vote in the poll for most overrated. Haliburton was also on last year's list with 3.7 percent of the vote, but he made a jump this year despite leading the Pacers to the Eastern Conference Finals last season and ranking third in the league this season with 9.2 assists per game.

"Perhaps our respondents think Haliburton got too much credit for that playoff run after Indiana’s first-round opponent last year was missing Giannis Antetokounmpo because of an injury and after Indiana’s second-round opponent, New York, dealt with a bunch of injuries," Amick and Robbins wrote.

Interestingly, Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert remained near the top of the list once again, placing second in the vote after finishing first last year. Despite being a four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, he still doesn't have the full respect of his peers.

"I don’t [understand] the Defensive Player of the Year stuff when you don’t guard the people who have the ball most of the time, the ones who are making most of the decisions," a player who voted Gobert for most overrated said. "I just don’t see it, nor does he strike any fear in me in my heart as a defender."
