Warriors' Jonathan Kuminga Reportedly Linked to Nets Ahead of Restricted Free Agency

Zach BacharApr 20, 2025

The Brooklyn Nets could emerge as a possible destination for Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga in restricted free agency, according to NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer.

Per Stein and Fischer, the Nets have "long loomed as a potential suitor" for Kuminga even though their exact level of interest "remains to be seen."

The 22-year-old is playing out the final year of his rookie contract and will become a restricted free agent in the summer.

Kuminga and the Warriors reportedly attempted to work out an extension entering the 2024-25 season, but both sides weren't able to reach an agreement prior to the deadline in Oct. 2024.

His long-term future with the organization seemed murky following Golden State's blockbuster trade for star forward Jimmy Butler, but it appears as though a reunion in free agency can still occur.

Warriors governor Joe Lacob told Anthony Slater of The Athletic that the team is “absolutely” and “100 percent” committed to re-signing Kuminga.

“I love that guy," Lacob said. "We love him."

Kuminga only appeared in 47 contests during the regular season due to an ankle injury, averaging 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game on 45.4/30.5/66.8 shooting splits.

His approval within the organization doesn't seem to be unanimous though.

Stein and Fischer reported Sunday that Warriors head coach Steve Kerr and other team figures have been hoping for "more development" from Kuminga as a playmaker.

As for the Nets, they wrapped up a 26-56 finish and will be building towards the future. They have the financial flexibility to potentially pry Kuminga away from the Warriors, as they own the most projected cap space in the NBA entering the 2025-26 season (via Spotrac).

Given his restricted status, Golden State will have the opportunity to match any offer that the forward receives in free agency.
