Luis Scola to Raptors: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction
Minutes after the NBA's moratorium period ended last Thursday morning, free-agent forward Luis Scola tweeted that he's headed to the Toronto Raptors:
According to Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski, Scola signed a one-year deal worth approximately $3 million. The team announced the deal on July 15.
“Luis is an accomplished NBA and international player. We are thrilled to add his experience and leadership to our team and our locker room,” said Raptors president and general manager Masai Ujiri in the announcement. “Luis is a winner wherever he goes.”
After Amir Johnson reportedly agreed to terms on a two-year, $24 million deal with the Boston Celtics, according to Wojnarowski, Toronto had been scouring the open market for replacement options at the 4.
And while the Raptors already have Patrick Patterson signed to a team-friendly deal at a combined $12.3 million over the next two seasons, according to Basketball Insiders, they've sorely needed depth up front with Tyler Hansbrough entering unrestricted free agency.
Scola should provide veteran stability for a Raptors team that's looking to exorcise its first-round demons and make a deep playoff run next season, according to TSN's Josh Lewenberg:
The Toronto Sun's Ryan Wolstat also indicated Scola could be a positive mentor for some of Toronto's younger players:
During the 2014-15 campaign with the Indiana Pacers, Scola appeared in 81 games (16 starts) and averaged 9.4 points and 6.5 rebounds while shooting 46.7 percent from the field.
The 35-year-old has also been a quality mid-range shooter throughout his career, drilling 44.5 percent of his shots between 16 feet and the three-point line over the past eight seasons, according to Basketball-Reference.com.
Scola's hardly the flashiest signing, but for a Toronto team that ranked dead last in power forward scoring last season, per HoopsStats.com, the move should pay immediate dividends.
