NBA Exec Says Western Conference Playoff Bracket Will Be 'Rock, Paper, Scissors'

Jack MurrayApr 11, 2025

The Western Conference playoff bracket could get messy this spring.

ESPN's Tim Bontemps and Brian Windhorst relayed the thoughts of a Western Conference executive on Friday who essentially said the bracket will be a toss-up outside of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

"It's matchup dependent and then it's rock, paper, scissors from there," the executive said.

The Thunder lead the pack with a 66-14 record. They have a 14-game lead over the second-seeded Houston Rockets, who hold a three-game lead over the third-place Los Angeles Lakers.

However, that's where the bracket gets really interesting. Only two games separate the Lakers from the eighth-seed Minnesota Timberwolves. The No. 4 seed is currently a tie between the Los Angeles Clippers and the Denver Nuggets, while the No. 6 seed is a tie between the Golden State Warriors, Memphis Grizzlies and the Timberwolves.

Every team will be in action on Sunday for the final day of the regular season before the Play-In Tournament gets underway on Tuesday.

Sunday's schedule will feature the Nuggets facing off against the Rockets, the Grizzlies taking on the Dallas Mavericks, Minnesota hosting Utah, the Lakers traveling to face the Portland Trail Blazers and a showdown between the Warriors and Clippers in San Francisco.

All of those games will tip off at 3:30 p.m. ET.
