Giannis Says Bucks Are 'Fighting for Our Lives' Amid NBA Playoff Bracket Seeding Push
Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo relayed the sense of urgency he and his teammates are feeling following their 133-123 win over the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Antetokounmpo said: "I kept saying to my teammates, 'We're fighting for our lives. We're fighting for our lives.' They think I'm joking, but I'm not joking. We're fighting for our lives right here. Every win counts."
By virtue of Tuesday's victory, the Bucks improved to 41-34 on the season, and they continue to hold the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference.
Milwaukee is getting close to clinching one of the top six seeds in the East, as it leads the seventh-place Orlando Magic and eighth-place Atlanta Hawks by five games with seven contests remaining on the Bucks' schedule.
Finishing inside the top six is hugely important since it would provide Giannis and the Bucks with a bit more rest and prevent them from having to play in the postseason play-in tournament.
It has been an up-and-down season for the Bucks, who started 2-8 before rebounding and getting to as many as 11 games above .500.
However, since All-Star guard Damian Lillard last played before landing on the shelf due to deep vein thrombosis, the Bucks are just 3-4.
Milwaukee won the NBA championship in 2021, but they have largely disappointed since then with a second-round playoff exit and two first-round playoff defeats.
Giannis missed two of the Bucks' five playoff games in 2023 due to injury, and he missed their entire first-round series last season.
Milwaukee is likely to be without Lillard this time around, but the team has a fighting chance as long as Antetokounmpo is healthy and playing at a high level.
The two-time NBA MVP and one-time NBA Finals MVP and has been one of the league's best players once again this season, averaging 30.4 points, 11.8 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.2 blocks per game.
He was at his best during Tuesday's win, scoring a team-leading 37 points on 12-of-18 shooting to go along with 11 assists, five rebounds and three steals.
As a team, the Bucks shot a remarkable 68.9 percent from the floor, which was the best field goal percentage by an NBA team in a regular-season game since the Los Angeles Clippers shot 69.3 percent in a contest in 1998.
That level of efficiency is not sustainable, but if the Bucks can maintain the momentum they built Tuesday, they will be a tough out come playoff time.
