Nicolas Batum Reportedly Declines Clippers Contract Option, Will Be Unrestricted FA

Scott PolacekJun 28, 2025

Nicolas Batum declined his $4.9 million player option for the 2025-26 season with the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday, per ESPN's Shams Charania, although it appears the door is open for a return.

Batum was with the Clippers from 2020-21 until they moved him to the Philadelphia 76ers early in the 2023-24 campaign as part of the James Harden trade. However, he returned to Los Angeles on a two-year deal that featured the player option last summer.

He is clearly comfortable with the Clippers given his decision to return last offseason, but he is now set to enter free agency after cutting his deal short by declining the option.

While he might not command a massive market in free agency, he does provide valuable outside shooting and versatile defense even if he is only a minor contributor at this stage of his career.

Batum averaged 4.0 points and 2.8 rebounds in 17.5 minutes per game while shooting 43.7 percent from the field and 43.3 percent from deep in 2024-25. The perimeter shooting stood out given how often opposing defenses would collapse on James Harden, Kawhi Leonard and Norman Powell, and he took advantage of that spacing at an impressive rate.

In fact, he turned in the best three-point percentage of his career during his age-36 season, which is a testament to his ability to revamp his game even if some of his athleticism isn't the same as when he was younger.

Batum's decision to hit free agency means other teams will have the opportunity to add a playoff-tested leader.

He has 76 career postseason games on his resume and is also accustomed to playing under a pressure-packed spotlight from his time suiting up for France during Olympic competition.

There was a time when Batum was a consistent scorer who averaged double-digit points per game in eight different seasons for the Portland Trail Blazers and Charlotte Hornets when he was younger.

That is no longer his game, but he can continue providing outside shooting, veteran leadership and the ability to defend multiple positions even at this stage of his career.

There are surely some potential suitors that would welcome such a skill set as they prepare for the 2025-26 campaign.
