Mavs' Kyrie Irving Undergoes Surgery on ACL Injury After Being Ruled Out for Season

Andrew PetersMar 26, 2025

Dallas Mavericks star point guard Kyrie Irving underwent successful surgery for his season-ending torn ACL he suffered earlier this month, per ESPN's Shams Charania.

According to Charania, the procedure was performed in New York at the Hospital for Special Surgery by HSS Chief of Sports Medicine, Dr. Riley J. Williams.

Charania added that Irving only had a torn ACL in his left knee and avoided damage to any other ligament or the meniscus.

Irving suffered the injury in the first quarter of Dallas' March 3 loss to the Sacramento Kings. Irving, who helped lead the Mavericks to the NBA Finals, has been the team's best player this season, putting up 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists. He had played his best stretch of basketball in February right before the injury, averaging 27.8 points across nine games.

Irving was the only player in the league this year putting up at least 20 points per game on 40 percent from the three-point line and 90 percent from the free throw line. It's the fifth season in which he has achieved those numbers.

Dallas has suffered several blows over the past few months, but none as consequential as Irving's season-ending torn ACL.

Anthony Davis, who the Mavs acquired in a blockbuster trade that sent Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers, played just one game in Dallas before suffering an adductor injury that left him sidelined from Feb. 8 till Monday.

The Mavericks have also been without Derick Lively II and Daniel Gafford recently. Dante Exum is out for the year after suffering a broken bone in his hand earlier this month.

Amid all the injuries, Dallas is currently sitting in 11th place in the Western Conference and will need a near perfect stretch to close out the season in order to make the playoffs.
