Keegan Murray, Kings Agree to 5-Year, $140M Contract Extension After Westbrook Deal
Keegan Murray is sticking with the Sacramento Kings for the long term.
The young wing agreed to a 5-year, $140 million extension with the team on Wednesday, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.
The move doesn't come as a surprise. The 25-year-old Murray is entering the final year of his rookie contract in the 2025-26 season and would be scheduled to hit restricted free agency a year from now. Had the Kings any doubts about keeping him going forward, letting him ride out the final year of his rookie deal and test out the market—the Kings could have still matched any offer sheet he signed—would have made sense.
But Murray has been solid in his three NBA seasons. His best campaign came in the 2023-24 season when he averaged a career-high 15.2 points to go along with 5.5 rebounds.
During the 2024-25 campaign, he averaged 12.4 points and 6.7 rebounds.
One concern is that his outside shot has progressively gotten worse over three seasons. As a rookie he shot 41.1 percent from three and followed that up with a 35.8 percent mark in his second season, but last year he only hit on 34.3 percent of his threes, a worrying trend.
Still, rangy forwards who can defend and stretch the floor have plenty of value, and while Murray's offensive game needs to take a step forward for him to emerge as a star, he undoubtedly has value for these Kings.
They made that clear enough on Wednesday by signing him to this extension.
