NFL Rumors: Aaron Rodgers Prefers Vikings; Could Retire Over Steelers, Giants Contract
Aaron Rodgers could opt to end his NFL career if the Minnesota Vikings decide not to sign him as a free agent.
Per The Athletic's Michael Silver, Dianna Russini and Alec Lewis, Rodgers' preference is to join the Vikings over active suitors in the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants.
The two latter teams have essentially put any other offseason business on hold while they wait for an answer from Rodgers, but The Athletic report notes it's "possible" he could choose to retire rather than sign with the Steelers or Giants.

The Vikings have been a surprise addition in the Rodgers' sweepstakes. It's been assumed they were prepared to go with 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy as their starter next season after letting Sam Darnold leave in free agency.
There are conflicting reports about how much interest the Vikings actually have in Rodgers. The Athletic described them as "strongly weighing the possibility" of pursuing him.
However, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler said on the Saturday morning edition of SportsCenter that the Vikings are more "loosely involved" but they don't want to go in too deep because they want to focus on McCarthy's development (starts at 1:50 mark).
The Giants and Steelers are entirely at the mercy of Rodgers right now. There's always the possibility that New York looks to add a quarterback in the draft, either with the No. 3 pick or potentially trading up with the Tennessee Titans to get the top pick.
It's not hard to figure out why Rodgers would have Minnesota as his preferred landing spot if it becomes an option. The Vikings just went 14-3 with Darnold as their starter. They have a great group of skill-position players, including Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson and Aaron Jones. Head coach Kevin O'Connell is regarded as one of the best offensive play-callers in the NFL.
Neither the Giants nor Steelers can match all of those attributes. Pittsburgh's new receiver duo of D.K. Metcalf and George Pickens has a lot of potential, but they're style of play does not match what Rodgers has historically wanted from his receivers.
The Giants have Malik Nabers and not much else. They did bring back Darius Slayton in free agency, even though he had been mentioned as a potential trade candidate dating back to 2022.
Another potential issue for both the Giants and Steelers are the offensive systems. Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Arthur Smith's strength is more in the running game and play-action passing game, which isn't something Rodgers likes to use.
The Giants system is hard to figure out because play-calling duties have been ping-ponging between head coach Brian Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka over the past three seasons.
There are once again questions this offseason if Daboll will call plays after handling those responsibilities in 2024.
Even though it seems far-fetched to believe that would retire this offseason after reportedly telling Jets officials he planned to play in 2025 during his meeting with new head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey before they released him, history suggests anything is possible at any time when Rodgers is involved.
Given how badly things went for Rodgers and the Jets last season, he may not want to be in a situation where that kind of thing could happen again. Since the Vikings look like the only team of these three on paper that could potentially challenge for a Super Bowl next season, it might be easier to walk away if they aren't an option for him.
