Green Bay received a lot of ridicule when it first hired Gottlieb due to his inexperience. While he played collegiately at Notre Dame and Oklahoma State before embarking on a pro career, he had never coached at a high level.
The Phoenix's dreadful 3-24 record might've flown under the radar more if it weren't for the fact their head coach put a target on his back from the jump, too. Upon taking this job, Gottlieb made it clear he wasn't giving up his nationally syndicated show on Fox Sports Radio.
The 49-year-old has been juggling both jobs all season. Earlier this month, he had to downplay the fact he missed one of Green Bay's practices because he was in New Orleans working Super Bowl LIX.
Compounding matters, Gottlieb remains terminally online, which can create its own problems.
None of this would be getting as much attention if Green Bay was winning games or at least hovering around .500.
But the school administrators have discovered that hiring a head coach with a national profile can backfire in a big way.
