Francisco Lindor: 'Would Be Very Humbling' to Be Named Mets Captain Before 2025 Season

Taylyn Hadley Feb 15, 2025

New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor said it would be “very humbling” to be named team captain ahead of the 2025 season.

"I do feel like I’m one of the leaders of the team, but there are a lot of leaders in (the locker room)," Lindor told reporters Saturday. "The captain thing is not for me to decide. If it does happen, it would be fantastic—an honor and a privilege. Something I would never take for granted. It would put me next to the greats of this organization forever, and it would be very humbling."

The Mets made a deep playoff run in 2023, ultimately falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-2 in the NLCS. The Dodgers went on to defeat the New York Yankees in the World Series. Lindor had a strong postseason, slashing .275/.387/.490.

The 31-year-old had a stellar regular season, earning All-MLB Second Team honors for the third time and securing his fourth Silver Slugger award. He finished second in NL MVP voting, trailing only Shohei Ohtani.

After an outstanding campaign, Lindor acknowledged that being named captain would add pressure—one he is prepared to shoulder—as he enters his fifth season with the Mets.

"My job is not going to change. Just because I’m the captain doesn’t mean I’m going to do more," Lindor said. "I’m still going to go out there and hold guys accountable. I expect a lot out of myself too. I expect guys, if they see me doing something that’s not right, to come up to me and tell me. I’ll continue to lead, play the game the right way, show up, post up and do whatever we need to do to win."

Lindor led the Mets in most major statistical categories last season, including RBI (91), stolen bases (29) and hits (169).

With key additions such as first baseman Pete Alonso and pitcher Drew Smith, the Mets are poised to be a serious contender in 2025 after coming up just short of the World Series a season ago.
