SGA, Thunder Reportedly Agree to $285M Contract Extension, Richest in NBA History
After being named NBA MVP and leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to an NBA championship, star point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been rewarded with a historic, bank-breaking payday.
According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Thunder signed Gilgeous-Alexander to a four-year, $285 million contract extension on Tuesday. The 26-year-old had two years and over $78 million remaining on his previous deal, so Tuesday's agreement will have his pockets bursting at the seams.

Charania also reported that Gilgeous-Alexander's deal includes an opt-out for the 2030-31 season:
Gilgeous-Alexander became eligible for a supermax extension following back-to-back All-NBA first-team selections in the previous two years. ESPN's Bobby Marks reported last May that he was set to become the first player in NBA history to earn $80 million in a season.
After Gilgeous-Alexander won the MVP award this season, Marks reported that he would be eligible to sign a five-year, $380 million extension if he chose to wait until after the 2025-26 season.
Gilgeous-Alexander continued his incredible ascension during the 2024-25 season, winning the NBA scoring title with 32.7 points per game while adding 5.0 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 1.7 steals to lead the Thunder to the best record in the NBA at 68-14. He was named NBA MVP for the first time in his career, just a year after finishing as the runner-up for the award.
During the playoffs, Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 29.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 1.7 steals as Oklahoma City won the 2025 NBA championship by defeating the Indiana Pacers in seven games. He was also named NBA Finals MVP, making him just the fourth player in NBA history ever to win MVP, Finals MVP, and a scoring title in the same season, joining Michael Jordan, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Shaquille O'Neal.
As the new face of the franchise, Gilgeous-Alexander gives Oklahoma City the chance to remain a perennial title contender for years to come.
By signing the rising point guard to Tuesday's extension, the Thunder will undoubtedly have a bright future as they seek to defend their first championship in franchise history.
