Beal and Wizards Enter Contract Negotiations
Thursday, July 2
According to the Washington Post's Jorge Castillo, the Wizards and Beal are starting to talk about a possible contract extension.
Beal is set to make $5.69 million in 2015-16 and has received a qualifying offer from the Wizards for $7.47 million the following season, according to Rotoworld.com.
Per J. Michael of CSN Washington, the Wizards will not be able to formally negotiate with Beal until July 9 and have until October to get a deal done. If not, they will have to wait until the end of next season.
Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld spoke with CSN Washington about the Beal situation:
"We have all the way to October to get something done on that front. We'll talk to his agent (Mark Bartelstein) at the appropriate time and see where that process takes us. Obviously, we think very highly of Bradley and we want him here for a very long time.
"
The guard has made his case for maximum money, averaging 15.6 points per game and 3.0 assists during his career. He has helped lead the Wizards to two-consecutive playoff appearances, both ending in Eastern Conference semifinal exits. In this year's postseason, Beal was the team's leading scorer with 23.4 points per game. He also added 5.5 rebounds and 4.6 assists.
Beal is a part of a young backcourt with point guard John Wall that provide a fast, dynamic style of play that has been very successful over the past two seasons in Washington. They will be keen to keep that partnership together for the foreseeable future as they try to take advantage of a weaker Eastern Conference.
