Amir Johnson to Celtics: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction
Power forward Amir Johnson has agreed to a two-year, $24 million deal with the Boston Celtics, according to Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski.
The 28-year-old has spent the past six seasons with the Toronto Raptors, where he has averaged 8.8 points per game and 6.3 rebounds.
Beginning his career in 2005 as an 18-year-old, Johnson spent four seasons with the Detroit Pistons before they traded him to the Milwaukee Bucks during the offseason in 2009. That same offseason, he was dealt to the Raptors.
The Celtics needed help to add depth at the forward position. On their roster, forwards Brandon Bass and Jae Crowder are free agents, according to RealGM.com. Johnson's acquisition could mean at least one of them will be playing elsewhere next season.
Johnson will be able to come in and help the likes of Kelly Olynyk and Jared Sullinger while becoming a mentor and valuable role player. He even gives the Celtics a new approach, according to ESPN's Jeff Goodman.
In his 10-year career, Johnson has averaged 22.6 minutes per game and could develop a platoon-like system in Boston to make sure its frontcourt stays fresh.
His presence can also help bring added playoff experience to a young side that has not tasted the postseason much. Johnson has made the postseason four times in his career, including appearances in the past two seasons.
