Trades for Teams in Danger of Selling Off 2026 🤔
The Athletic's Katie Woo first reported the two sides were in "serious discussions."
Following the Diamondbacks' acquisition of Arenado, here's a look at the team's updated depth chart:
- Catcher: Gabriel Moreno, James McCann, Adrian Del Castillo
- First Base: Tim Tawa, Pavin Smith, Tyler Locklear
- Second Base: Ketel Marte, Blaze Alexander
- Third Base: Nolan Arenado, Blaze Alexander, Jordan Lawlar, Geraldo Perdomo
- Shortstop: Geraldo Perdomo, Jordan Lawlar, Blaze Alexander
- Left Field: Jorge Barrosa, Corbin Carroll, Lourdes Gurriel Jr.
- Center Field: Alek Thomas, Blaze Alexander, Jorge Barrosa, Corbin Carroll
- Right Field: Corbin Carroll, Jorge Barrosa
- Designated Hitter: Jordan Lawlar, Adrian Del Castillo, Ketel Marte, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Pavin Smith
Arenado hit .237 (.666 OPS) with 12 home runs and 52 RBI in 107 games for the 2025 Redbirds. He has two seasons left on a nine-year, $275 million deal and would have to waive his full no-trade clause for the move to be completed.
He began his career with the Colorado Rockies, suiting up in Denver for eight seasons, winning Gold Glove honors each year and making five All-Star games. Arenado posted an .890 OPS during his time in Colorado alongside 235 home runs and 760 RBI. He led the National League in home runs on three occasions.
The Rockies traded the third baseman to the Cardinals prior to the 2021 offseason, sending him and $51 million to the Cardinals in exchange for five players. For his St. Louis career, Arenado has posted a .797 OPS alongside 106 homers and 372 RBI.
Over time, Arenado has amassed eight All-Star nods, 10 Gold Gloves and five Silver Sluggers.
The third baseman is a potential Hall of Famer, and he once stood as one of the game's elite players during the 2010s. Over the past few years, Arenado has seen an offensive decline, though.
St. Louis, long a perennial playoff contender, also has now missed the postseason three straight years. The Cards certainly have more financial flexibility in moving Arenado's contract, so it's clear the team is looking to rebuild in a sense as it searches for its past playoff success.
The team has already traded pitcher Sonny Gray and first baseman Willson Contreras to the Boston Red Sox in separate deals this offseason.
After making a surprise run to the World Series in 2023, the D-backs have fallen short of the playoffs in each of the last two years. Arizona went 80-82 in 2025 and traded starting third baseman Eugenio Suarez to the Seattle Mariners midway through the year, creating the opening at the hot corner that the franchise is hoping to fill with Arenado.
