Kevin Garnett Reportedly Re-Signs with Minnesota Timberwolves

Matt FitzgeraldJun 28, 2015

Kevin Garnett is reportedly on course to finish his career with the Minnesota Timberwolves, as he's chosen to remain with the franchise that drafted him rather than explore a more realistic championship opportunity elsewhere.

Darren Wolfson of KSTP reported Tuesday that the veteran agreed to a deal with Minnesota.

"I'm incredibly excited and rejuvenated to be a part of this talented, committed team," Garnett told Wolfson

The 39-year-old veteran returned to Minnesota just before last season's trade deadline in a one-for-one swap, with the Timberwolves sending Thaddeus Young to the Brooklyn Nets. Garnett had an expiring contract that made the deal feasible and was a $12 million cap hit, per Spotrac.com.

At this stage of Garnett's career, it stands to reason he'll demand a far lower salary. His average of 19.6 minutes in five games with the Wolves last season shouldn't increase, because the power forward position just got new life with the addition of No. 1 overall draft pick Karl-Anthony Towns.

Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix noted that Towns will have the opportunity to learn from Garnett:

"Outside of Kevin Garnett in '95, Towns had the most impressive workout I've seen," head coach Flip Saunders said after the draft, per the Timberwolves' official Twitter account.

Having a 15-time All-Star and one-time NBA champion in Garnett around to mentor Minnesota's young, exciting players will be a huge bonus for Saunders as he tries to mold the team into a playoff contender. Garnett is an especially valuable resource for Towns since they play the same position.

Although 2013 top overall draft pick Anthony Bennett was rumored to be on the trade block prior to the draft, he is still on the roster as of now. Bennett has all the makings of a bust, but if he stays in Minnesota, perhaps he can get back on track with Garnett's guidance.
