Kings Reportedly Exploring Trade Scenarios for Gay
Tuesday, June 23
Even though Gay enjoyed a career year with the Kings in 2014-15 with 21.1 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game, his future in Sacramento is quite uncertain.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, new head coach George Karl wants superstar center DeMarcus Cousins out of town, but it is more likely that the Kings will deal Gay instead.
One trade possibility would involve Gay being shipped to the Denver Nuggets in exchange for point guard Ty Lawson, per ESPN.com's Chris Broussard.
The rumblings come as somewhat of a surprise since Gay recently revealed that he and Karl have discussed how he might be utilized during the 2015-16 campaign, according to an interview on SiriusXM NBA Radio (via NBA.com's Jason Wise): "I'm trying to learn him as much as possible. He's talked to me about playing more at the four."
The 28-year-old veteran saw time at both small forward and power forward last season, but his comments suggest that he could play alongside Cousins more often if they both remain in the fold.
Sacramento also holds the No. 6 overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft, which would add even more talent to a team that already boasts Cousins, Gay, Darren Collison and Ben McLemore.
Gay could potentially bring in an interesting package of draft picks and young players if the Lawson deal doesn't happen, but it would likely prolong the rebuilding process for a franchise that hasn't reached the playoffs since 2006.
