Cavaliers Guard Matthew Dellavedova's Rise Inspires Hollywood Film

Kyle NewportJun 22, 2015

Not only did his performance in the 2015 NBA playoffs lead to an arena in his home country of Australia being renamed in his honor, but Cleveland Cavaliers guard Matthew Dellavedova's remarkable rise has also inspired a Hollywood film.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald's Ebony Bowden, a fictional narrative based on Dellavedova's story is in the works. Producers Jason Shuman and Robert Galinsky are in on the project, which will be called Final Four. The concept is in place, but it has yet to be determined whether the story will be made into a Remember the Titans-like feature film or a Friday Night Lights-like series.

"It will be a film or a scripted series," Galinsky said, per Bowden. "We see real potential here in following these kids from grade school to high school to college to the NBA."

Final Four is reportedly going to be a tale of three young Australian basketball players who come to the United States to play in college. Actors Woody Harrelson and Nick Nolte have reportedly been approached to play coaches in the film.

Dellavedova went from being a role player to an impact player in the NBA Finals, which is the ultimate underdog story. The former undrafted free agent was unable to help his team bring a championship to Cleveland this season, but there's no doubt that the series against the Golden State Warriors put his name on the map.

While the film will depict Dellavedova's rapid ascension, it's not going to be entirely based on his life.

"It won't be Matthew's life story or autobiography but will be inspired by his exploits in Melbourne and overseas, and we're meeting with his management in the next couple of weeks," Galinsky said, per Bowden.

This idea was reportedly drummed up a few years ago by actor Josh Howlett. Now, it looks like it's going to become a reality, adding another chapter to Dellavedova's unbelievable story.
