Afflalo to Reportedly Opt out of Current Deal
Sunday, June 21
According to NBA insider David Aldridge, Afflalo will opt out of his deal this summer and become a free agent.
The 29-year-old has a player option for 2015-16 worth a $7,362,000 base salary with a $387,500 incentive. In all likelihood, he could command a better deal this summer, especially with the salary cap projected to skyrocket in the future.
Afflalo spent last season with the Blazers and Denver Nuggets. Between his time with the two franchises, he averaged 13.3 points a game on 42.4 percent shooting. He served as a nice secondary scorer for Portland behind Aldridge and Damian Lillard, especially after Matthews went down with an injury.
Aldridge posited that the Blazers' need to re-sign Afflalo will be heightened with the uncertainty around Matthews' recovery.
Portland will likely have some competition since Afflalo is a proven scorer who shouldn't come with a high price tag. Plus, other teams might be willing to pay over the odds now so that when the cap does increase, the deal will look much more reasonable.
