Seth Rollins vs. Brock Lesnar: Defining Match for Rollins Wasted on B-Level PPV

Erik BeastonJun 22, 2015

Make no mistake about it, Seth Rollins' WWE World Heavyweight Championship defense against Brock Lesnar at Battleground is the biggest match of the Architect's career.

To this point, the former Ring of Honor standout and Shield member has dominated WWE television as its lead heel. His character development over the last year rivals that of any Superstar on the roster, and few have consistently delivered in main event matches the way the Iowa native has.

But it is one thing to work the likes of Roman Reigns, John Cena and Dean Ambrose, all of whom are regularly featured on Raw and SmackDown. It is another to be thrust into a position where you are deemed worthy of competing against Lesnar in one of his rare contractually obligated dates.

When Rollins steps inside the squared circle with the Beast Incarnate, it will not only solidify his position as one of the elite stars in today's WWE; it will also be a career-defining match the likes of which few Superstars ever have the opportunity to enjoy.

Unfortunately for Rollins, it is a defining bout wasted on a B-level pay-per-view event.

There is nothing more frustrating than watching WWE mismanage what is a fairly easy setup. At WrestleMania, Seth Rollins cost Brock Lesnar another successful and epic WWE World Heavyweight Championship defense when he cashed in Money in the Bank and pinned Roman Reigns.

Lesnar was suspended the night after on Raw for attacking broadcasters and just recently made his return on the June 15 episode of Raw.

Common sense would suggest that WWE lets the feud build over the next two months, leading to a truly epic showdown between the unstoppable badass and the cowardly heel at SummerSlam, where Lesnar rights the wrong of WrestleMania and again stands atop the company as its conquering beast.

It would pop a buyrate, add WWE Network subscribers and serve as the fitting conclusion to one of the most important events of the year.

Instead, the match has been booked for a second-rate show that no one will remember by the end of the year; a show whose sole purpose is to lay the foundation for SummerSlam. It is a waste of a legitimate marquee match, not to mention the defining bout in the career of one of WWE's brightest young stars.

Why miss out on something with that much potential?

The answer? Triple H.

Recent booking suggests that the mounting tensions between Rollins and The Authority will ultimately lead to a bout between the Architect and Triple H at SummerSlam.

So rather than allowing Rollins to build his star against the biggest box-office attraction the sport has to offer, on one of the grandest stages in professional wrestling, he will square off against someone whose best days as an in-ring competitor are behind him.

Someone whose own ego continues to fuel his appearances in high-profile matches on the biggest cards of the year.

Rollins is that rare heel around whom entire shows can be built.

In fact, Raw has been for months now.

To take away a huge moment like a headline match against Lesnar at SummerSlam and stick it on a meaningless setup show like Battleground just to soothe the ego of the company's COO is the very definition of awful booking.

The fact of the matter is that Rollins has more than earned the opportunity to battle Lesnar at SummerSlam.

Unfortunately, he will have to settle for delivering a Match of the Year performance against the most recognizable face in the industry at Battleground, proving to management and WWE Creative just how wrong they were for robbing him of the more important and relevant pay-per-view match a month later.
