Steve Blake Exercises Player Option with Trail Blazers: Latest Details, Comment

Joe PantornoJun 19, 2015

The Portland Trail Blazers announced that point guard Steve Blake exercised his player option for the 2015-16 season.

CSN Northwest's Jabari Young reported that Blake is set to receive $2.1 million next season.

Blake has been with the Blazers a total of five seasons in three different stints with the team, averaging 7.8 points per game and 4.5 assists. The Blazers are just one of seven teams he has played on over his 12-year career.

At 6'3", Blake provides good defense and size for his position and shoots well from the field at just over 40 percent.

A backup to Damian Lillard, Blake appeared in 81 games last season averaging 4.3 points and 3.6 assists per game.

Bolstering the backcourt allows the Blazers to fully focus on the frontcourt and re-signing forward LaMarcus Aldridge. Bleacher Report NBA analyst Ric Bucher believes the Blazers have a "very good" chance at the big man returning.

The Trail Blazers went 51-31 on the season prior to being eliminated by the Grizzlies in the playoffs. Keeping the team's depth intact by retaining talent like Blake is a step in the right direction for a young team looking to make a deeper playoff run in the upcoming season.
