Thabo Sefolosha, Pero Antic Trial Date Set for NYC Arrests
More than two months after their arrests outside a New York City nightclub, Atlanta Hawks players Thabo Sefolosha and Pero Antic learned Tuesday when they would get their day in court.
According to Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the teammates' trial will begin Sept. 9 in New York.
Both players were charged with obstructing governmental administration and disorderly conduct, while Sefolosha was charged with resisting arrest and Antic was charged with second-degree harassment, per Vivlamore.
During the arrest, it is alleged Sefolosha suffered a broken right fibula and ligament damage, which knocked him out for the remainder of the 2014-15 season. After the incident, the 31-year-old swingman blamed the arresting officers for his injury, according to Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today: "On advice of counsel, I hope you can appreciate that I cannot discuss the facts of the case. Those questions will be answered by my attorney in a court of law. I will simply say that I am in great pain, have experienced a significant injury and that the injury was caused by the police."
Losing Sefolosha severely damaged the Hawks' depth, and it also compromised their team defense as they were swept out of the Eastern Conference Finals by the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Per Ian Begley of ESPNNewYork.com, Sefolosha's status for the start of the 2015-16 campaign is very much in question as he continues to nurse his injuries:
While the Swiss veteran and the Hawks undoubtedly remain concerned about his health, he and Antic have plenty more on their plates in the form of a trial that could prevent them from playing if they are convicted.
