Ranking the Greatest Crossovers from the 2014-15 NBA Season
Stephen Curry just spent a season crossing over the entire NBA, but he wasn't the only guy flashing his fanciest moves this year.
James Harden, Chris Paul, LeBron James and more stars showed off some glimmering dribbling, as well.
It's not just Steph. The rest of the league had its own flare, too. So, let's take a look at it, the best crossovers from the 2014-15 NBA season.
20. Big Man Can Move
1 of 20Every other move on this list is from a guard, but not many big men can move with the ball like Blake Griffin.
We had to wait until the playoffs—specifically until Game 2 of the San Antonio Spurs-Los Angeles Clippers first-round series—to see a power forward or center pull off a crossover to get him into the year's top 20 (and it barely scraped him in). But, thanks to Boris Diaw and his charge-taking ways, Griffin can start us off in style.
19. Dwight Buycks Takes off Gary Harris' Training Wheels
2 of 20The Los Angeles Lakers were getting crushed on the road; nothing out of the ordinary there. But at least the little-known Dwight Buycks found a way to make the game entertaining for fans of the Purple and Gold.
Buycks receives a dribble-handoff from Robert Sacre, pulls up, goes through the legs and sends the rookie Gary Harris flying to the floor. Not a great look for Harris, but you have to imagine Buycks was just fine with the result.
18. Shvedding the Defense
3 of 20I bet you expected a group of All-Stars would start us off for the best crossovers of the year. Well, you were expecting wrong.
There are plenty of superstars and future Hall of Famers on deck, but for now, let's appreciate the once Houston Rocket and current New York Knick, Alexey Shved (who would lead the list for worst play of the year), churn out his best move of the season.
17. Jamal Crawford Dances Around Steve Blake
4 of 20How could we possibly rank the best crossovers of 2014-15 without including a man whose nickname is literally J. Crossover?
Whether Jamal Crawford is making shots or not, he's always going to add some pizzaz in whichever game he's playing. That's just what Crawford does. This move on Steve Blake (Blake's name is a theme in this list, by the way) is just another example of that.
16. 'Reke Looking Chique
5 of 20Gordon Hayward was playing way off Tyreke Evans. So, an initial crossover and an unaggressive ball screen didn't make much of a difference in defending him. He recovered quite nicely.
But then 'Reke changed hands again, this time just as Hayward gambled for a steal. I don't think Hayward was too proud of what happened next.
15. James Harden Makes the Knicks Look Like the Knicks
6 of 20James Harden has one of the nastiest handles in the NBA. Pablo Prigioni is now fully aware of this.
This move doesn't happen without Prigioni trying to jump the screen, but Harden doesn't use the pick, goes right and hits a step-back after two beautiful dribble moves.
If you think this is Harden's last appearance, calm down, there's more to come.
14. Deron Williams Gets DeMarre Carroll
7 of 20Let's go back to playoff basketball and turn to the Brooklyn Nets for some fun.
The Nets, fun?
Deron Williams, spry?
Darn straight. Check it out.
13. Chris Paul Says 'Bye Bye' to Stephen Curry
8 of 20We generally think of a crossover as a transfer of the ball from one hand to another. But Chris Paul, as he tends to do, redefines basketball vernacular. Here, CP comes down the court, crosses over from side-to-side—but using the same hand—and slithers by Stephen Curry.
But Steph would certainly get his revenge...We'll get to that in a bit.
12. Right Arm Is Strictly for Buckets
9 of 20Nick Young is as big a goofball as there is in the NBA. Whether it's his hilarious postgame interviews poking fun at Kobe Bryant or as he calls him "little man" or his insane tweets about why he doesn't have tattoos on his right arm, Swaggy P is always here to entertain.
One thing we know Young can do is have fun. And he certainly does it with this crossover move on (guess who) Steve Blake.
11. Ty Lawson Shoots out of a Canaan
10 of 20Ty Lawson might be tiny but he's still one of the most explosive guards in the league. When he gets a head of steam going, he can make you look silly.
Cue Isaiah Canaan, a fellow undersized, quick point guard, whose assignment was Lawson on this particular night. Lawson gets Canaan off balance, blows by him and makes a perfect dish to J.J. Hickson for the basket.
10. Deron to Be Great
11 of 20Hold up. The slow and rickety Deron Williams is making a second cameo on the best crossovers of 2014-15 rankings? Heck yeah.
D. Will may not move like he used to, but that doesn't mean he can't turn around Brandon Bass. If you don't believe me, check out what he did after getting the switch on this play.
9. LeBron James Shows Up Thabo Sefolosha
12 of 20Thabo Sefolosha invaded LeBron James' space too many times here.
Thabo actually makes a couple of great plays on the ball. First, he deters James from driving the lane. Then, he pokes the rock away. But as Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto might say, all he did was awaken a sleeping giant.
8. James Harden Crosses the King
13 of 20LeBron isn't all beast, though. Sometimes, the human side shows. And James Harden is pretty darn good at bringing out the flaws in his opponents.
The impressive part is really the way Harden goes up against LBJ. He goes right at him with total cockiness, as if to say, "I've got you right where I want you." And somehow, he did.
7. Getting Iggy with It
14 of 20The Warriors have so many big-name players now, it's easy to forget about Andre Iguodala, but the former All-Star and current Golden State reserve might be the best bench player in the NBA.
He isn't what he used to be, but Iggy is still one of the best defenders and athletes on the floor at any given moment. He's also able to pull off some dazzling moves, like this one on a diving Matthew Dellavedova.
The crossover may not even be the most impressive part of the play. Look at that pass!
6. Kemba Walker Mirrors a Previous Game-Winner
15 of 20I'm sitting at home watching the Charlotte Hornets play the Milwaukee Bucks early in the year (in what was one of the best games of the season), and it's a tie game with only seconds remaining in overtime. Kemba Walker had already hit a shot to continue the game past regulation. Now, he was clearly going to need more heroics to win the whole thing.
So, what does Walker do to bring me to my feet even though I was alone on my couch? The exact same move he used to beat University of Pittsburgh (and to send Gary McGhee flimsily flying) during the 2011 Big East Tournament. It was just as awesome the second time.
5. Wiry Irving
16 of 20We're in the top five. It's time for the ridiculous. Welcome, Kyrie Irving.
Avery Bradley is one of the best defenders in the NBA. You could make a legitimate case for him on an All-Defense team. He's fantastic. On the ball, off it, it doesn't matter. Dude's a beast...but Kyrie doesn't care.
No matter how great Bradley is on D, this bounce from Irving is better.
4. Kemba Walker Embarrasses Nikola Mirotic
17 of 20Welcome to the league, Nikola Mirotic. And welcome back to this list, Kemba Walker.
Walker is too quick for most guards. Lord knows he's feisty enough to put Mirotic on his bum. Unfortunately, the Hornets' honeycomb court doesn't have any cushioning on it.
3. James Harden Makes Ricky Rubio Crawl
18 of 20Now, we get to Harden's best artwork, courtesy of Ricky Rubio's kneework.
Harden gets Rubio so off-balance that by the end of the play, the Minnesota Timberwolves point guard looks like Andy Dufresne elbowing his way out of a sewage pipe. Except Dufresne was far more successful in what he was trying to do.
2. Stephen Curry Ruins Chris Paul
19 of 20Let the final run for Steph Curry begin...
We start with Curry's revenge on Chris Paul, a crossover which sent the Internet into a frenzy of memes, GIFs, Vines and Twister photoshops. Don't know what I'm talking about? Just ask Kevin Hart.
1. Stephen Curry Ruins the Clippers
20 of 20"That could be the greatest move I've ever seen live." - Jeff Van Gundy on the above play
Sure, Curry makes an all-time move on this shot. He doesn't even look like he's aiming the jumper. He's just throwing it up there and it's magnetically going into the hoop. But none of that is what makes this clip most memorable.
Watch Steve Kerr, appreciate the humanity in coaching and then appreciate the robotic nature of the NBA's MVP.
