Here's the backstory behind the name, per the team's official site:

"

The Atlanta Hawks Basketball Club moniker expands on the idea that we are more than just a team of 15 players. Our Basketball Club recognizes the contributions of the entire staff to our success. It respects and honors past players and coaches and their significance. Ultimately, the new Basketball Club designation reflects our commitment to building an emotional connection with our fans and maintaining an inclusive environment that welcomes all people. In the Atlanta Hawks Basketball Club, 'everyone matters' and all are welcome.

"

Winning requires a team, not just a player. That's pretty much the idea behind the new identity.

Now, the Hawks have a moniker that promotes unity.

The club will use the Pac-Man logo in both the primary and partial primary logos. As for the secondary insignia, the Hawks went with a new design to pay tribute to the city of Atlanta.

The secondary logo features Hawks wings lifting a flaming basketball, which symbolizes "how the city of Atlanta rose from the ashes to become one of the nation's leading international cities."

As Sporting News noted, Atlanta's new logo is following a current NBA fad:

Of course, this means that new uniforms are on the way. The Hawks are expected to unveil them before June 25's NBA draft.
