According to Spotrac, Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett is set to earn a base salary of $6 million in 2015, making him the 13th-most expensive player at his position. That reportedly isn't enough for the 29-year-old, who is planning to hold out until he receives a better deal.

Bennett Skips Team OTAs

Sunday, May 31

Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times reported Bennett skipped the Seahawks' organized team activities in order to angle for a more lucrative contract:

"

"Trying to get the contract right," said Bennett, when asked about sitting out the first three OTAs this week. "I'll be there shortly. I don't know when I'll be there. Depends on the team and stuff. See how it works out.’"

Bennett is entering the second season of a four-year contract worth up to $28.5 million, with $16 million guaranteed, signed in March 2014, just days before he could have become an unrestricted free agent.

[...]

Bennett said he would like to be paid at least among the top eight at his position. According to OvertheCap.com, that would give Bennett a yearly average salary of $10 million.

"

Seattle is no stranger to a star player holding out for part of the offseason. Marshawn Lynch failed to attend the first day of training camp last year as he looked to get more guaranteed money. Eventually, the two sides hammered out an agreement.

Bennett has unquestionably been a key member of the Seahawks over the last two seasons. His 15.5 sacks between 2013 and 2014 lead the team. Many would argue that Bennett has probably played above his contract and is in line to get a bit of a bonus.

It's still pretty early in the offseason, so Seattle fans shouldn't begin panicking that this will turn into a protracted quarrel. Plus, Bennett's demand is rather reasonable when looking at his production.

Both he and the team will likely posture a little more before a new contract is signed before the regular season gets underway.
