We Remember: Houston Drafting J.J. Watt Was Not Popular with Texans Fans

Kyle NewportMay 5, 2015

The 2015 NFL draft took place just last week, so fans around the country are in the midst of critiquing their favorite team's picks. Some teams are getting good reviews, while others are being ripped apart.

If history tells us anything, the fate of these players is never truly known until the season starts.

Fans get overly emotional when it comes to their favorite team. That's what makes them fans. When a team makes a "questionable" pick, fans want to know why.

NFL teams aren't perfect. They sometimes miss on picks. However, there are also times in which their seemingly unpopular picks work out well.

For instance, take a look at how Houston Texans fans reacted to the team taking Wisconsin defensive end J.J. Watt with the 11th pick in the 2011 draft:

That was the initial criticism, and much of the later reaction shared the same sentiment:

How many of those fans are feeling a little silly right now?

Watt is already a three-time Pro Bowler, a two-time Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year and has even become a valuable member of the Texans offense. Oh, and the 26-year-old defensive end/tight end was so good this past season that he was the runner-up for the 2014 NFL Most Valuable Player award.

To be fair, there was plenty of supportive reaction. However, if you scroll through all of the comments, you might get the feeling that Watt wasn't a popular pick among Texans fans.

As Watt's case shows, fans shouldn't overreact to a team's draft picks in May. Let the players play first and then start to evaluate them. Otherwise, you could be laughing at yourself a few years down the road.
