Tevin Mitchel to Washington Redskins: Full Draft-Pick Breakdown

James DudkoMay 2, 2015

The run on potential special-teamers continued for the Washington Redskins. General manager Scot McCloughan used the pick his team originally entered the sixth round holding to take cornerback Tevin Mitchel.

Hit by injuries at Arkansas, Mitchel faces an uphill battle making the final roster. But if he does prove his health, Mitchel at least boasts the size to fit in McCloughan's revamped secondary.

Big-hitting safeties Jeron Johnson, Dashon Goldson and rookie Kyshoen Jarrett have been added. So has veteran corner Chris Culliver, another big-bodied cover man out on the edge.

That seems to be the preferred mold at the position for the Redskins on McCloughan's watch. Culliver, all 6'0", 199 pounds of him, joins 5'11", 197 pounder Bashaud Breeland, along with David Amerson who stands 6'1" and tips the scales at 205 pounds.

McCloughan clearly wants the type of bulky, physically imposing defensive backfield he helped build as a personnel man with both the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers.

At 6'0" and 190 pounds, Mitchel fits well with this makeover. At least he will if he can stay healthy.

That was a problem for the former Razorback at the collegiate level. He nearly became a redshirt in 2014 due to hamstring problems, per NwaOnline.com's Tom Murphy (h/t NFL.com College Football 24/7's Chase Goodbread).

B/R's Michael Felder noted Mitchel's experience in the SEC as a plus point. He also highlighted how well the player operates in the slot, good news for a Washington D missing an obvious fit at that crucial position:

Washington certainly offers an opportunity for a prospect NFL.com's Mark Dulgerian dubbed a "career sub package corner." Breeland and Culliver look like the team's obvious starters on the outside.

Meanwhile, Amerson needs to reassess after a nightmare second season at the pro level. By the same token, veterans Tracy Porter and DeAngelo Hall face their own battles proving they can stay on the field.

Just like Jarrett though, Mitchel's best initial chance of making the team and making an impact will come on special teams. Mark Bullock of The Washington Post has detailed how McCloughan wanted some extra defensive backs who would bide their time in football's third phase:

If Mitchel earns the right to help out on special teams, he'll likely be joined by college teammate Martrell Spaight, the first Razorback taken off the board by McCloughan, per The Washington Post's Mike Jones:

Mitchel certainly isn't a glamour pick. But he's the kind of brittle yet capable prospect worth taking a chance on at this stage of the draft. McCloughan continues to stick rigidly to his plan, no bad trait in a GM.
