Ibraheim Campbell to Browns: Full Draft-Pick Breakdown

Ryan McCrystalMay 2, 2015

There's a trend developing for the Cleveland Browns in the 2015 NFL draft.

After ignoring Johnny Manziel's off-field concerns last year and inheriting the train wreck that is Josh Gordon, general manager Ray Farmer has elected to not just steer clear of the risky prospects but heavily favor those who rate positively in the character department.

Ibraheim Campbell was four-year starter, a senior captain at Northwestern and a four-time member of the Big Ten's All-Academic team.

This was a somewhat surprising selection because safety was not one of the Browns' primary needs entering the draft, but Day 3 is all about finding the best values.

On the field, Campbell projects as an immediate impact playmaker on special teams for the Browns, with the potential to develop into a starter at strong safety.

At Northwestern, Campbell primarily lined up in the box at strong safety but does have some experience lining up deep in a free safety position.

An NFC Scout told NFL.com's Lance Zierlein"When you first start watching him, you think he can play high or down (in the box), but he just gives up too many plays over the top to trust him on top."

Donte Whitner is entrenched as the starter at strong safety for the Browns, and he's under contract through the 2017 season. But Whitner turns 30 in July, and his contract is structured in such a way that the team could easily part ways with him before his contract runs out.

If Campbell progresses as the Browns hope, he could put himself in position to compete for a starting job within a year or two, making the decision to cut Whitner an easy one as he enters the final year of his contract.

While Campbell will almost certainly play at a starter's level against the run, perhaps even as a rookie, it's his lack of coverage skills that dropped him to the fourth round and may hold him back in the NFL.

A typical strong safety will be asked to cover tight ends and occasionally slot receivers, but Campbell has limitations in both matchups.

At just 5'11" and with 30" arms, Campbell lacks the ideal length to match up against the game's elite tight ends. And in terms of athleticism, he doesn't quite have the fluid agility to stay with quicker slot receivers.

It's easy to see Campbell playing strong safety for the Browns, but it's worth mentioning that free safety is probably the more immediate need.

Restricted free agent Tashaun Gipson will return for the 2015 season, but, according to ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi, contract negotiations have been difficult.

It's possible the team thinks highly of Campbell's coverage skills as a deep safety and views him as a potential future starter in Gipson's role, should he elect to hold out for an extended period of time and then bolt as a free agent after the 2015 season.

Even if Campbell never emerges as a starter, it's tough not to appreciate this selection. He has the physical tools and experience to offer the Browns immediate value on the special teams coverage units and he at least gives the team some hope of developing into a starter down the road.
