Tennessee Titans Received No Serious Offers for Marcus Mariota, No. 2 Pick
There was plenty of speculation leading up to Thursday's first round of the 2015 NFL draft that the Tennessee Titans were considering trading out of the No. 2 spot. Ultimately, they decided to stay put and select Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota.
According to Peter King of The MMQB, the Titans never received an offer for the second selection that they took under serious consideration.
Despite that, there was no shortage of chatter surrounding teams wanting to trade up in order to take the 2014 Heisman Trophy winner. Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, that included the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns:
Titans general manager Ruston Webster quickly put any chance of dealing Mariota to rest, according to Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean:
The Eagles were frequently mentioned in conjunction with a trade to land Mariota, but Albert Breer of NFL Network reported that they hadn't made the kind of offer the Titans wanted:
The Eagles, led by former Oregon head coach Chip Kelly, had obvious interest in landing Mariota. Per King, Kelly certainly doesn't blame the Titans for resisting the urge to make a deal: "I think they made the right maneuver, staying and picking Marcus. If I was in the same position I would have done the same thing."
The Titans would have entered the season with Zach Mettenberger and Charlie Whitehurst as their primary options under center. They have not had a legitimate franchise quarterback since Steve McNair in 1995 out of Alcorn State, and Mariota has the potential to change that.
As we saw with the Colts in 2012 with Andrew Luck, one player can change a franchise's entire direction.
