DeMar DeRozan spoke about his teammate's honor following the announcement, via Josh Lewenberg of TSN:

While a Sixth Man of the Year Award might not be a big deal for many NBA organizations, it certainly is for the Raptors, as Bruce Arthur of theย Toronto Star noted:

For clarification, Arthur was only considering players, as Sam Mitchell won the Coach of the Year Award in the 2006-07 season, and Bryan Colangeloย won Executive of the Year that same season.

Williams, 28, averaged a career-high 15.5 points and 2.1 assists this season in just 25.2 minutes per contest. Only DeRozan (20.1 PPG) and Kyle Lowry (17.8 PPG) averaged more points for Toronto this season.

Turner Sports' Matt Winer weighed in on Williams' winning the award and the work it took to get back to the point he's at now:

The Raptors will be hoping Williams can continue giving the team a spark off the bench, especially as they try to rebound from a Game 1 overtime loss to the Washington Wizards in their opening-round playoff series. He struggled in the 93-86 defeat, finishing with just 10 points on 4-of-16 shooting.

Williams has certainly established himself as a huge contributor for the Raptors this season, so he'll need to be on his A-game to help Toronto get past Washington and advance deeper into the postseason.
