Goran Dragic: Latest News, Rumors and Speculation Surrounding Heat Guard

Mike ChiariApr 17, 2015

The Miami Heat seemingly scored a major coup when they acquired guard Goran Dragic from the Phoenix Suns prior to the trade deadline, but they will have their work cut out for them when it comes to keeping him on South Beach in 2015-16 and beyond.

Dragic to Opt Out of Contract

Friday, April 17

Dragic may very well return to the Heat next season, but Miami will have to compete with the rest of the league to secure him, as the 28-year-old guard will opt out of his contract and become a free agent, according to Ira Winderman of the Sun Sentinel:

Although the Heat fell short of the playoffs, the Slovenian star played extremely well after the trade, averaging 16.6 points, 5.3 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game.

Despite his decision to opt out, the NBA's reigning Most Improved Player made it clear that he would like to return if possible, per Bleacher Report's Ethan J. Skolnick:

The feeling is mutual, as head coach Erik Spoelstra is hopeful that Dragic will ultimately re-sign as well, according to Tim Reynolds of The Associated Press:

If that is going to happen, though, Dragic intimated that he needs a long-term commitment from the Heat:

Miami has some solid pieces in place that could help it return to contention next season. Dwyane Wade and a healthy Chris Bosh will anchor the team, and Dragic would be a great supporting player as well.

Dragic figures to be a hot commodity on the open market since he is in his prime and averaged over 20 points per game in 2013-14, so while the Heat may have a slight advantage due to his affinity for the organization, they'll definitely have to pony up.
