J.R. Smith Sets Odd Record as Part of 3-Point Barrage
Cleveland Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith set an unusual NBA record during Sunday's 99-94 win over the Chicago Bulls, becoming the first player in league history to attempt 17 or more field goals without a single shot from two-point range or the charity stripe, per NBA.com/Stats.
Smith took all 17 of his shots from beyond the arc, hitting eight of those to finish with 24 points. He also added four rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block over a game-high 43 minutes, without any turnovers to spoil the interesting stat line.
Per Basketball-Reference.com's play index, Smith is the first player in league history to attempt 14 or more three-pointers in a single game without attempting at least one shot from two-point range.
The previous record of 13 was held by three different players, most recently accomplished in January 2013 by New Orleans Pelicans forward Ryan Anderson.
There have been 45 separate instances of a player attempting 10 or more three-pointers without a single shot from inside the arc, but all of the other 44 fell far short of Smith's ridiculous outing.
It should really come as no surprise that Smith holds this record, as he's repeatedly been criticized throughout his career for relying too heavily on his three-point shot.
The 29-year-old guard often puts together the kind of red-hot shooting performances that can almost single-handedly lead a team to victory, but he's also been known to shoot his team right out of winnable games.
It's a trade-off the Cavs have been happy to live with so far given that Smith has made 39.3 percent of his shots from three-point range since coming over from the New York Knicks in a January trade.
