LeBron James Passes Patrick Ewing for 20th on NBA's All-Time Scoring List

Matt FitzgeraldApr 2, 2015

Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James needed just two points in Thursday's game against the Miami Heat to surpass Patrick Ewing for 20th on the NBA's all-time scoring list.

NBA on ESPN reported on the notable development early in the first quarter as James took on his former team at Quicken Loans Arena. His first pair of points of the night gave the Cavs a 12-11 lead with 7:22 to go in the opening frame.

Ewing, who starred for the New York Knicks for the majority of his playing career, finished with 24,815 points in 17 seasons. This just goes to show how prolific the 30-year-old James is, who has plenty of years ahead to play.

Next up for James to pass on the scoring list is Los Angeles Lakers legend Jerry West, whose silhouette is the centerpiece of the NBA's logo. West has 25,192 career points, so it won't be long before King James eclipses him.

But none of these scoring accomplishments will likely mean much to James until he ascends much further up the hierarchy. What matters most is winning a championship for Cleveland in his return to the Cavs after claiming two titles in Miami.

Tom Withers of The Associated Press set the scene when James paid a visit to Akron recently, which reemphasized the former MVP's commitment to delivering a winner to northeast Ohio:

A tough start to the 2014-15 campaign preceded what's been an excellent run for the Cavs in the second half of the season, as they've risen to second in the Eastern Conference.

The Cavs may face the Heat in the opening round of the playoffs, so Thursday's contest should be a better indication of what James and his Cleveland squad will look like when the postseason rolls around.
