Nike Air Jordan 1 Retro Low 'Varsity Red' Release Date, Pics and Retail Price

Matt FitzgeraldMar 26, 2015

Those who find beauty in simplicity won't be disappointed when the Nike Air Jordan 1 Retro Low Varsity Red shoes hit stores this Saturday.

The Varsity Red swoosh that runs up the side against this clean white shoe comprises the only other color present in this revamped design. Issuing a modern take on an Air Jordan 1 sneaker only adds to the prestige.

Below is an overview of the information to know ahead of Saturday's release, along with more details regarding the shoe.

Nike.com's official release to announce the Air Jordan 1 Retro shoes has the best photos, but XXL Magazine has a snapshot of most of the key details:

The most notable difference between this deep throwback and other Air Jordan reissues is the logo. Absent is the world-renowned "Jumpman," which is a silhouette of Michael Jordan dunking the ball, as he did so often in his legendary NBA career.

In these Varsity Reds, the back has a neat decal with the words "Air Jordan" in a wave-like pattern over the top of what looks more like pilot wings. "Jumpman" can't be seen on the inside or outside of the shoe's tongue, either—a departure from most Air Jordan models both retro and current.

Jordan's aerial acrobatics are still the underlying theme, but it's a far different look than most shoe enthusiasts and basketball fans have come to recognize with this brand.

Low-top sneakers don't seem to be as fashionable anymore. The general tendency seems to be toward exotic designs, which are often skewed in favor of high-tops. Even the vintage shoe reissues often tie their modern updates to this preference for higher-cut shoes.

Such is not the case with this Air Jordan 1 remastering. It is a versatile shoe from a stylistic standpoint in that it is not only a tribute to the flavor of decades prior, but it creates an even more original feel because of the way the sneaker is cut.

Too much of a good thing can become a bad thing when it comes to getting too complicated with design concepts. Air Jordan is a known commodity celebrating its 30th anniversary.

While other retro sneakers might get more of a new-age touching up, the simple red and white scheme deployed in this specific design works on a multitude of diverse levels. Such is the goal of a commercially successful shoe. Air Jordan will probably have another big sales hit on its hands as a result.
