Al Harrington Retires from NBA After 16-Year Career: Latest Details and Reaction
After 16 years spent between seven different NBA organizations, Al Harrington's career is over. The veteran forward officially announced his retirement on Wednesday at the Toyota Center while helping the Denver Nuggets prepare for their Thursday game in Houston.
"I'm officially retired," Harrington said, per Christopher Dempsey of The Denver Post. "I don't know if there's paperwork that I gotta fill out or anything. But my career is over."
Harrington, 35, most recently played with the Fujian Sturgeons of the Chinese Basketball Association. He left the club in November to pursue a return to the NBA, but no offer came, and Harrington has been a free agent since. He played 34 games with the Washington Wizards last season, averaging 6.6 points and 2.4 rebounds per game.
The No. 25 overall pick in the 1998 draft, Harrington spent parts of seven seasons with the Indiana Pacers and played for the Atlanta Hawks, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, Orlando Magic, Nuggets and Wizards. For his career, he averaged 13.5 points and 5.6 rebounds. Harrington's ascent in part helped usher in the era of the stretch 4, as he shot 35.2 percent from beyond the arc for his career.
