Westbrook Joins Robertson with Incredible 8-Game Averages
Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook recently joined Oscar Robertson as the only players in NBA history to average 35 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists over a span of eight games, per NBA.com/stats.
The 26-year-old point guard's recent run of dominance has been well documented, with his usage increased in the absence of star forward Kevin Durant, who has been out since Feb. 19 because of a foot injury.
Westbrook's ongoing eight-game run started on Feb. 26, when he put up 39 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists in a 117-113 loss to the Phoenix Suns. He's added four more triple-doubles in the subsequent seven contests, giving him six in 11 games since Durant last suited up.
Westbrook is averaging 36.3 points, 11.4 rebounds and 10.1 assists over his last eight appearances, albeit with 6.3 turnovers per game.
The Thunder obviously aren't complaining, as Westbrook has made up for the turnovers by converting a reasonable 42.1 percent of his field-goal attempts while getting to the line 13.5 times per game during the remarkable stretch.
He thus sports a true shooting percentage of 54, thanks to an 83.3 percent conversion rate on all those free-throw attempts over the last eight games.
For the season as a whole, Westbrook has a true shooting percentage of 53.9, with a field-goal percentage of 43.4 and free-throw percentage of 83.8.
Though far from the league's most efficient shooter, Westbrook deserves a ton of credit for essentially maintaining his season-long percentages while taking on a ton of added volume.
He'll look to continue his remarkable run Monday night against the Dallas Mavericks in what figures to be a high-scoring game.
