Dan Williams to Raiders: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Tim DanielsMar 11, 2015

The Oakland Raiders have reportedly reached an agreement with defensive tackle Dan Williams. He spent the first five years of his career with the Arizona Cardinals.

ESPN's Michael C. Wright first reported the move, which NFL Network's Ian Rapoport confirmed.

Kent Somers of AZCentral.com reported that the deal averages around $6 million a season with around $15 million in guaranteed money.

A first-round pick of the Cardinals in 2010, Williams has steadily developed into a run-stopping force in the middle of the defensive line. He's registered 157 tackles, two sacks and even an interception return for a touchdown in 70 career games.

The Tennessee product has good short-area quickness for a player of his size (6'2", 327 lbs). It allows him to get around blocks to make key stops at the line before a back is able to reach the second level. He also has the power to take on multiple blockers, opening up other defenders to make the play.

He doesn't belong in the top-tier group of defensive tackles from which Ndamukong Suh received a massive free-agent deal. But Williams is a solid second-tier option who should provide good value without the same level of investment.

The Cardinals allowed him to hit the market, which left his future up in the air.

Ultimately, Williams decided it was time to move on after surveying the available options. There's a transition period any time a player changes teams, but his main task of stopping the run will remain the same and should help make the switch go smoothly.

It's a deal that doesn't come with a ton of risk. The defensive tackle has a track record of being pretty durable and, at age 27, should still be at the point where he's enjoying his peak performance, at least for a couple more seasons.

While it's not the type of signing that will likely cause the fanbase to erupt, the impact on the defense should be easily noticeable in 2015.
