Nike always goes all-out with its shoe production, but this is something else entirely. Instead of merely designing a sneaker that appeals to kids, the company has decided to create a wardrobe built around the design.
Here's what the kids have to look forward to, via Nike Basketball on Twitter:
Given how popular collector's sets are for things like DVDs and video games, it's only logical that Nike would want to capitalize on this opportunity with a kids' T-shirt that can be paired with the sneakers. The shirt isn't exactly my cup of tea, but it's designed to appeal to a specific audience who will love it.
As far as a close-up view of the actual shoe, let's go to the Sneaker News' Twitter feed for a side look at the Fruity Pebbles design:
The key to the shoe is that there's some room to breathe. If Nike decided to cover the whole thing in Fruity Pebbles colors, it would be painful to the naked eye. By making the vamp portion of the shoe black, with the colors taking up the shoelaces and edges, it's a more playful design.
Plus, making the entire shoe as colorful as Fruity Pebbles would make it easier to dirty up if they wear them outside as the temperatures warm up. Having the black portion makes it so scuffs and dirt can be hidden longer.
In an era where collecting shoes has become big business, Nike is taking full advantage of things. There will be many adults who buy this sneaker to pad their throng, as is their prerogative, but making these a kids-only thing does bring some of the sheer entertainment value of the apparel back.
Sometimes, it's fun to just be a kid with a fun pair of LeBron James basketball shoes.
