Browner Reportedly Signs With Saints
Thursday, March 12
Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports reported that Browner has signed a three-year deal with the Saints.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported that Browner and the Saints are nearing a deal, with a source saying the contract was "Almost finished."
Earlier in the day, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reported that the New Orleans Saints offered Browner a contract worth more than $5 million per year during his visit. Rapoport noted that landing Browner would give the Saints the enforcer who head coach Sean Payton wanted in the secondary.
On March 11, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Browner planned to visit with the Saints on Wednesday, and the Washington Redskins after that, as he kicks off his free agency.
Browner a Free Agent After Reportedly Refusing to Take Pay Cut to Stay with Patriots
Tuesday, March 10
"Patriots have not informed CB Brandon Browner they will exercise his option, therefore he's a free agent, source says," reported Garafolo. Albert Breer of NFL.com, citing a source, previously stated Browner wouldn't take a pay cut to stay in New England.
Yesterday, Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald noted the Patriots will reportedly allow Browner to talk to other teams and explore his worth.
"If the Patriots exercise Browner's option, he would count $4.8 million against the cap, but he would also earn a $2 million roster bonus tomorrow," Howe wrote. "If they decline the option, they would save $4.8 million against the cap without any dead money because Browner didn't receive a signing bonus last year."
According to Howe's source, Browner could get $7-8 million on the open market given the inflated contracts reportedly handed out to players such as Byron Maxwell and Brandon Flowers.
Browner, 30, played in nine games for the Patriots last season, accumulating 25 tackles and an interception. He missed the first four games of the season due to a substance-abuse suspension after he tested positive for marijuana in 2013, which kept him out of the postseason and Seattle's Super Bowl triumph that year.
He missed an additional game after his suspension due to an ankle injury before making his debut against the New York Jets in Week 6.
With the top free agents at cornerback off the market (outside of Darrelle Revis, of course), Browner could be a popular target for teams, as he's a proven player who has thrived on excellent defenses in Seattle and New England.
